What is Included

IMAGES:

  • “The only remaining evidence of my ordeal was the sight of my blackened fingertips.” – Frost bite, his fingers look bruised.
  • “The deep tiredness I had felt yesterday was gone” – Acting more energetic and enthusiastic, not walking around lazily.
  • “The bitter feelings, however, hadn’t diminished. To leave the place would free me from an unrelenting presence which accused me” This gives me an image of an awkwardness between the two characters.

HOW DO THESE IMAGES AFFECT OUR UNDERSTANDING:

  • Blackened Fingertips – If he has frost bite It will make carrying his gear and doing things with his hands hard. This is stated in the text: “Already I was forgetting that they were damaged and was surprised when I couldn’t fiddle with the small key to the petrol stove”  It would also affect Richard because he would have to do things for the narrator because of the narrators blackened fingers/frost bite. example: “Richard took it from me and lit the stove” It would also slow them down if they needed to climb.
  • “The deep tiredness I had felt yesterday was gone” This is described when the text states: “I flung my sleeping bag across the tent roof” the narrator also stated that “Indeed the only remaining evidence of my ordeal was the sight of my blackened fingertips” Which is meaning he is feeling completely fine, the only thing that is affecting him is his blackened fingertips.
  • “The bitter feelings, however, hadn’t diminished. To leave the place would free me from an unrelenting presence which accused me” – This effects my understanding of the text because the narrator hasn’t explained what happened between the two characters.

LANGUAGE:

  • When the narrator states ” The deep tiredness I had felt yesterday was gone” he could have just used the word tiredness but by adding Deep in front of it, it adds more meaning and intensity to the word tired to make it seem like his tiredness was more intense.
  • When the text states “No one could challenge my conviction that I was as much a victim as Joe” this makes us wonder what happened to Joe. I think this has been included to make us wonder what happened as the author has left out vital details so we don’t know the full story yet.
  • The author includes words to add more expression and meaning to the text for example: “Voracious appetite” and “Bitter feelings” this gives a more of an understanding of the text because there is more description.

  1. Hayley, you have shown an effective understanding of some of the key lines/selected vocabulary in this section of the text. Continue to explain the sights, sounds, feelings and “understandings” the reader gains of the narrators, their environment and their decisions.

Also, Hayley, can you please add all of your work to your blog? I.e. All of the work up to Chapter 6 – “The Final Choice”
